THE CAR & THE PARTS
Owned and
piloted by Jeremy and Wendy Helms of Garage1217, our 2006 project tC
came to us as a project car that had yet to lose its automotive virginity
to performance mods. Having previous experience with other Toyota platforms,
Jeremy and NonStopTuning now wanted to transform this quiet little car
that could, into a little beast that would!
The plan
was simple and Jeremy got to work fast. A TRD Supercharger was acquired
and installed in Jeremy's own garage, "Anyone with the right tools
and a bit of courage can handle this installation in a day" says
the proud owner of our project tC. All the pieces in the kit were properly
installed and specs were double checked. The ECU was then re-flashed
by Toyota (we highly recommend this, regardless of what may be elsewhere
on the net) were
enjoying 7psi of blissful boost.
Next up
was the task of adding some go-fast goodies, and this is where NST stepped
in to help out. Our 65mm overdrive SC pulley (NST02065)
was installed, in less time than it took the local Pizza Shop to deliver
our lunch, and boost levels went from 7psi to 9.5psi at redline.
While at
work, Jeremy decided to throw on his Megan header and S-Pipe for a little
extra "bling" and called it a day. The engine remains completely
stock otherwise, as no other modifications are necessary for the extra
boost levels.
THE RESULTS
Most Scion
tCs post numbers in the range of 194-199WHP at the stock boost level
of 7psi with the TRD charger. One of the highest WHP supercharged tCs
we have seen recently, our project tC posted some very impressive numbers
on the dynamometer. Max Power recorded was 231.24 while Max Torque came
in at 199.16.
Doing the complicated math tells us that our new 65mm SC pulley, along
with a header and S-Pipe, has netted us an extra 30+ WHP, while remaining
in the efficiency range of the stock engine management and fuel system.
Obviously other modifications and higher numbers are possible with extra
tuning, but our testing over the past year has been to determine whether
or not the TRD ECU is capable of handling an extra 2.5psi for our customers
who wish to use this pulley with no further tuning or modification.
The obvious answer is YES!
THE COST
2006
Scion tC: $16,500
TRD supercharger: $3,000
NST 65mm pulley: $90
Pizzas for lunch: $18
231 WHP, 199 Torque... Not too shabby
SEPTEMBER UPDATE
We had a chance to take the NST/GARAGE1217 project car out to the ScionInvasion
event in Roswell, NM during September 2006 and we had a blast. The car
was entered in the Scion tC Extreme Class and came away with top honors.
Many thanks to Jeremy and Wendy for doing such a great job of preparing
the car, all the other fellow Scion owners and enthusiasts who we met
over the weekend, and the Scion corporate crew including Mr. Scion Racer
himself, Chris Rado!!!
OCTOBER
UPDATE
Our
second event with the car, and our second trophy, came at HIN Scion
VIP in Phoenix Arizona...
